Selected Essays On the Work of Gertrudis Rivalta

Edited by: Jacqueline Loss

Book Description

Edited by Jacqueline Loss, this publication presents a collection of critical essays on the work of Cuban artist Gertrudis Rivalta. Contributors to this volume include María Antonia Cabrera Arús, Odette Casamayor-Cisneros, Dantaé Garee Elliott, Inileidys Hernández, Rosa Marquetti, Lázara Menéndez, Suset Sánchez, and Gwen Unger. The volume also features an insightful interview with Rivalta conducted by Mailyn Machado. The first scholarly publication to focus exclusively on Rivalta’s remarkable body of work, Selected Essays tackles a spectrum of themes. These include questions regarding the Soviet influence on twentieth-century Cuba, representations of the Black experience in Cuban media and art, the nexus of music and visuality, the political resonance of Rivalta’s performance art, and the imaginaries that inform the representation of Black and mixed-race women. The volume includes an appendix listing Rivalta’s referenced works, building upon the Hemispheric Institute’s digital and print exhibition catalog Selected Pages Gertrudis Rivalta, published in April 2022.
